The kids have been saving for quite a while, and yesterday, we counted their money for them, and they each had a bit over eleven dollars. So, the wife took them to the store for some toy shopping.
We don't pay any allowance, but sometimes we pay them a little money for going above and beyond the call of childly duty. They cheerfully help all the time, and love doing it. Johnny loads the dishwasher and loves to vacuum. Nat folds laundry, and delivers it to the appropriate rooms.
There's lots of other little things, and sometimes we reward spectacular effort, and tell them why, and encourage them. It's funny, too, the wife or I take our change out of our pockets and set it on a counter, and Nat swoops in like a crow and nails a penny or three.
And I'll play Hot/Cold with her and Johnny, and hide a quarter in the living room somewhere. Teaches them awareness, and to look under things.
So they headed off to the store, and I am always amazed at the stuff they pick. He came marching in proudly with some sort of motorcycle jump thing that you pull started, and it promptly broke about two minutes after he got it out of the box, and he and the wife headed back out to trade it for something that works.
Nattie bought one of those full size Barbi heads with hair, and all the goodies to fix her hair up with. She brought it to me to show me, and I asked her if I could hold it, and after she handed it over to me (reluctantly) I said 'oh, she's so beautiful!' and started kissing Barbi and making out with it, and Nat was quite horrified and snatched it away from me and huffed away most scandalized.
There's just not enough hours in the day to mess with people's heads.
